Korean Air Expands Atlanta Service with Record Double Daily Flights
Korean Air is set to enhance its service from Seoul Incheon to Atlanta, introducing double daily flights starting on May 11, 2024. This move marks a significant increase in capacity, as the airline phases out the Boeing 747-8i from this route. The new schedule will consist of two daily flights using the Boeing 777-300ER, which is known for its substantial cargo capacity.
This expansion comes as Korean Air aims to strengthen its presence in Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport by passenger numbers and available seats. The airline currently operates daily flights to Atlanta, increasing to 11 weekly services beginning March 29, 2024. The full double daily service will be in place just in time for the peak travel season.
The Boeing 777-300ER configuration features 277 seats: eight in first class, 42 in business class, and 227 in economy. With this additional service, Korean Air will increase its available seat capacity for this route by 51%, offering travelers more options for connecting flights. Delta Air Lines already operates double daily flights on the same route, meaning that the two airlines will together provide four daily services between Atlanta and Seoul.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
Korean Air has served the Atlanta market since 1994, initially offering both nonstop and one-stop flights via cities like Chicago O’Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth. Since the early 2000s, it has provided nonstop service, deploying various aircraft types over the years, including the A380 and several models of the Boeing 747 and 777. Currently, the 777-300ER is the sole aircraft type used for this route.
The airline previously achieved a maximum of two daily flights between 2010 and 2014 and briefly in 2022, but never on a consistent daily basis. The upcoming service marks a notable return to this frequency, representing the highest number of flights Korean Air has offered to Atlanta in its operational history.
Passenger Statistics and Market Insights
According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Korean Air transported approximately 224,500 passengers to and from Atlanta in the 12 months leading to July 2025, achieving an impressive 86% seat load factor. In comparison, Delta Air Lines carried around 352,700 passengers on its two daily flights, with a load factor of 85%.
Booking trends indicate that about 20% of Korean Air’s passengers connected to other flights in Seoul, with popular destinations including Ho Chi Minh City, Pusan, Manila, Beijing, and Bangkok. Additionally, a significant portion of travelers—36%—originated from Seoul and connected to Delta flights in the U.S. Savannah, Orlando, Nashville, and Lima were among the most frequent routes taken by these passengers.
The expansion of Korean Air’s service to Atlanta emphasizes both the airline’s commitment to its U.S. operations and the growing demand for transpacific travel. As travel patterns continue to evolve, the collaboration with Delta Air Lines further enhances options for international travelers, fostering a robust connection between the U.S. and South Korea.
