Ohio Universities Secure $3M NSF Grant to Enhance Research

Ohio has taken a significant step to enhance its research capabilities with a new $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This funding is intended to strengthen the state’s research infrastructure and is part of a broader initiative expected to extend its impact nationwide. The grant will support the Supporting and Harmonizing Research Endeavors (SHARE) project, aimed at addressing various challenges faced by research institutions across Ohio.

Co-principal investigators for the SHARE initiative are Jane Strasser from the University of Cincinnati and Douglas Delahanty from Kent State University. They highlighted that one of the key issues the project aims to resolve is the struggle to maintain adequate staffing levels for research, especially among smaller universities. Strasser, who serves as the senior associate vice president of research at UC, emphasized the importance of resource sharing. She explained that by utilizing shared platforms, the research process can be simplified, facilitating the dissemination of findings.

Development of Regional Practice Models

The grant, which will be distributed over a four-year period, is set to help establish Regional Communities of Practice (RCOP). These models will focus on leadership training and efforts to reduce regulatory barriers that hinder research activities. Strasser noted that launching the RCOP model in Ohio provides an opportunity to refine the approach before potentially expanding it to other states, including Iowa and Minnesota.

This initiative not only aims to consolidate Ohio’s research strengths but also serves to support institutions that are either expanding their research capabilities or restructuring their administrative frameworks. The SHARE project represents a concerted effort to enhance the academic landscape within Ohio, aligning with the state’s recognition as home to R1 top-tier research universities, a designation indicating extensive research activity.

By addressing these challenges, the SHARE project positions Ohio as a leader in research innovation, with the potential for significant nationwide influence. The collaboration between the University of Cincinnati and Kent State University underscores a commitment to advancing research and fostering educational excellence in the region.
