“There is no way Travis Hunter should’ve chosen to be baptized on the morning of a game,” Bayless stated. He suggested that the rookie’s focus on football was dwindling, claiming, “He is losing interest. He is mentally checking out on the Jags.” Bayless further argued that the Jaguars’ underutilization of Hunter was contributing to his perceived disengagement, particularly on defense, where he is considered exceptionally talented.

The backlash to Bayless’s remarks was swift, particularly from former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III. In a direct response on X, Griffin described Bayless’s comments as not only disrespectful but also indicative of arrogance. “Dear @RealSkipBayless,” Griffin wrote. “Questioning Travis Hunter’s focus and dedication to his team because he gave his life to God through baptism is not analysis. After the game, Hunter himself addressed the situation, clarifying his intentions regarding the baptism. “I’ve just got to let the game come to me,” he explained. “The coaches are trying to dial up some things for me.
