Verstappen Edges Out Norris for Sprint Pole at U.S. Grand Prix
Max Verstappen captured the Sprint pole position at the United States Grand Prix, narrowly defeating Lando Norris by just 0.071 seconds. This performance solidifies Verstappen’s potential comeback in the championship race, as he continues to close the gap on leader Oscar Piastri, who qualified third and was nearly four tenths slower than Verstappen.
The qualifying session took place at the Circuit of the Americas on October 18, 2023, where Verstappen showcased his trademark ability to deliver under pressure. Norris initially dominated the earlier segments, topping SQ1 and SQ2, but Verstappen’s exceptional final lap proved decisive. Commentator Martin Brundle remarked on Sky Sports F1, “Stunning final sector from Max Verstappen. Once again, he delivers something nobody else on this grid can deliver at this time.”
Qualifying Highlights and Performance Insights
Verstappen’s recent performance has been nothing short of remarkable, having gained 41 points from Piastri over the last three races. With six rounds remaining in the season, he now trails Piastri by 63 points. The stakes were high during the Sprint qualifying, particularly with points available during Saturday’s Sprint race, scheduled for 18:00 local time.
Behind Verstappen and Norris, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg qualified fourth, followed by George Russell of Mercedes and Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin. Notable performances also came from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who managed to just scrape into SQ3 but ended up qualifying eighth and tenth, respectively. The Williams drivers, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, qualified in seventh and ninth.
Despite Verstappen’s success, Red Bull faced a challenge with Yuki Tsunoda, who was unable to set a competitive time and qualified in 18th position due to a timing miscalculation in SQ1. Kimi Antonelli, who was recently confirmed as a Mercedes driver for 2026, narrowly missed out on SQ3, finishing in 11th place, just 0.006 seconds shy of advancement.
Verstappen’s Strategy and Team Dynamics
Verstappen’s approach during the qualifying session reflected a keen understanding of the track, which he described as “very bumpy.” He noted the challenges posed by variable wind conditions and the necessity to manage speed through high-pressure segments. “It’s been a nice qualifying. Throughout all the segments, we were quite close, just about trying to put it all together when it matters at the end,” Verstappen said.
McLaren’s Lando Norris acknowledged the competitive nature of the session, expressing satisfaction with his performance despite not securing pole. Norris stated, “Of course I would have loved to be on pole, but not a surprise for us to be just a bit slower than the Red Bull lately.” His teammate, Piastri, had a more challenging outing, describing his lap as “messy” and finishing significantly behind Norris.
As the teams prepare for the Sprint race, which will feature a total of 19 laps, the top eight finishers will earn points in a format that rewards positions from eight down to one. The competition is expected to be intense, particularly given the uphill run to Turn 1, which has historically been a hotspot for incidents.
With the excitement building for the U.S. Grand Prix weekend, fans can tune in to Sky Sports F1 for extensive coverage, including the Sprint race and the main Grand Prix scheduled for October 19. The upcoming races are crucial as the championship battle intensifies, leaving fans eagerly anticipating how the dynamics will unfold on the track.
