Arlington Seguin Clinches Playoff Spot with Dramatic Fake Punt
UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, the Arlington Seguin Cougars have secured a 23-22 victory over the Mansfield Summit Jaguars, clinching the final playoff spot in District 3-5A Division II on Thursday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The dramatic win was sealed by a pivotal 32-yard pass on a fake punt by senior wide receiver Johnaven Polk in the closing minutes, showcasing the Cougars’ grit in a must-win situation.
With just under three minutes left on the clock, Seguin faced a crucial 4th-and-7 from their own 43-yard line. Head coach Joe Gordon made the bold decision to go for the fake punt, leading to a successful completion to G’Manii Smith. “I didn’t want them to have the ball with that much time left,” Gordon stated, emphasizing the importance of making a play under pressure.
Seguin’s victory marks the team’s second consecutive playoff appearance and the ninth in school history. The Cougars, now standing at 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the district, will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed. In stark contrast, Mansfield Summit finishes its season at 6-4, marking the second consecutive year they miss the playoffs after five straight appearances from 2018 to 2023.
The game was a nail-biter, with Summit making a strong push in the second half. After an 8-8 tie at halftime, the Cougars took control with two quick touchdowns, courtesy of Polk’s Wildcat runs from 10 and 4 yards out. Polk, who rushed for 24 yards and caught three passes for 30 yards, played a crucial role in the Cougars’ offense.
Summit’s senior quarterback Ian Gebhardt attempted to lead a comeback, finishing with 152 rushing yards on 18 carries. Gebhardt scored on a 10-yard run to narrow the gap to 23-14 before his teammate Adarion Nettles added a touchdown from 2 yards out, bringing the Jaguars within just one point late in the fourth quarter.
Despite their efforts, Summit was unable to convert on their final drive, which ended on an incompletion in the end zone. Coach Channon Hall expressed mixed feelings about the game, noting, “I felt good about the way we were coming back in the second half.”
Both teams endured a challenging first half marked by penalties, with a total of 13 flags for 140 yards impacting their momentum. Summit initially took the lead with a swift 54-yard touchdown run by Gebhardt, but Seguin answered back with a determined drive, culminating in a touchdown pass to Smith.
As the Cougars celebrate their playoff berth, they are set to face tough competition in the coming weeks. The victory not only solidifies their spot in the postseason but also serves as a testament to their resilience and teamwork throughout the season. Fans and followers will be eagerly watching to see how far Seguin can go in the playoffs.
