Boulder High’s Haunted House “Shipwreck of Souls” Opens This Weekend
UPDATE: Boulder High School’s much-anticipated haunted house, “Shipwreck of Souls,” opens its doors this weekend, promising thrills and chills for brave visitors. Starting on October 28, 2023, attendees can explore a terrifying underwater world until October 31, 2023.
This year’s theme dives deep into the ocean’s dark side, featuring a sunken cruise ship filled with gory sea creatures and eerie sounds. Co-director Mads Cass, a junior at Boulder High, emphasized the extensive effort put into creating a memorable experience. “You can tell that a lot of work and a lot of love was put into it,” Cass stated.
The haunted house is a significant event for the school’s theater department, showcasing the talents of approximately 40 student actors and tech crews. Technical director Paul Mealey, a former actor in the haunted house, described the project as “student-run, adult-supervised,” highlighting the collaborative nature of the production.
Guests who dare to enter will be transported back to the 1920s, exploring rooms reminiscent of a submerged casino and ballroom. The students have transformed the school hallways with creative decor, including barnacles, tentacles, and seaweed, to simulate a sunken wreck.
Each year, the haunted house offers a fresh experience, as the students select new themes. Senior co-director Scarlett Caste shared that her fear of fish inspired this year’s theme. “Truly, it never feels the same,” Caste remarked.
As visitors navigate the haunted ship, they will hear crashing ocean waves accompanied by music from the era. Actors, adorned in fake blood and gory outfits, will add to the immersive terror. “There’s blood in everything,” said makeup head Odalis Torres, noting the extensive use of special effects in their designs.
“Shipwreck of Souls” will operate from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Halloween. An additional “lights on” version will be available at 6 p.m. on Saturday for those seeking a less frightening experience. Tickets are available for purchase at tinyurl.com/3ktx638r or at the door, with proceeds benefiting the theater department.
This thrilling event not only entertains but also fosters a sense of community and creativity among students. “The goal is just to make smiles happen — and some screams,” Mealey said.
Don’t miss your chance to experience the spine-chilling “Shipwreck of Souls.” Get your tickets today and prepare for an evening of unforgettable fright!
