Couple Turns Dream into Reality: Off-Grid Living in Washington
UPDATE: A couple from Arizona has turned their dream of owning a vacation home in the breathtaking Pacific Northwest into reality, despite skyrocketing housing prices. Sally Marks and her partner, Carol, have embraced an off-grid lifestyle on a 4.6-acre property they purchased for $160,000 on the Olympic Peninsula.
The couple fell in love with the region during a visit in 2010, captivated by the stunning landscapes of Port Townsend, known for its kayaking, hiking, and vibrant arts scene. But as housing prices soared above $500,000, their dream of a traditional second home seemed increasingly out of reach.
In 2022, a breakthrough came when their real estate agent presented them with a wooded lot, complete with wildflowers and good cell service, albeit lacking basic utilities. Marks and Carol saw potential where others might not, purchasing the land sight unseen and ordering a $65,000 Airstream Basecamp to serve as their home.
Living off the grid has its challenges, but the couple has adapted remarkably. They utilize portable solar panels, capture rainwater for washing, and haul drinking water from a nearby facility. Their Airstream has become a cozy retreat, with an outdoor tent providing additional living space, including a rehearsal area for Carol’s local band.
Despite the simplicity of their off-grid lifestyle, they remain connected and resourceful. They store the kayak at a marina 18 miles away, ensuring access to hot showers and garbage disposal. Their commitment to conservation is evident, yet they embrace modern conveniences where possible.
As winter approaches, they prepare their property for the cold before returning to their on-grid home in Arizona. This unique arrangement allows them to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest for three to five months each year.
Marks shares her gratitude, stating, “Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure, but we don’t regret our decision.” Their story serves as an inspiring reminder that dreams can be realized, even in the face of financial obstacles.
This couple’s journey highlights the power of determination and creativity in achieving one’s dreams, proving that home is where you make it—whether on or off the grid.
As housing markets continue to fluctuate, their innovative approach may resonate with others seeking affordable solutions in desirable locations.
