Divine Ugochukwu delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 23 points to help Michigan State secure a 76-72 victory over Penn State on March 16, 2024. Despite struggling with turnovers throughout the game, the Spartans managed to fend off an upset bid from the Nittany Lions, marking their fifth consecutive win against this rival.

Michigan State faced challenges during the match, committing a season-high 17 turnovers and trailing for significant portions of both halves. Led by Ugochukwu’s efficient shooting—he finished the game with an impressive 8-for-10 from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc—the Spartans rebounded from a previous defeat at the hands of No. 4 Duke.

Key Contributions and Turning Points

In addition to Ugochukwu’s performance, Jaxon Kohler contributed a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Carson Cooper also added 10 points. The game was closely contested, featuring six lead changes, including four in the final twelve minutes, reflecting the intense rivalry between the two teams.

Penn State, which led by as many as nine points in the first half, received strong performances from Freddie Dilione V, who scored a career-high 22 points, and Kayden Mingo who added 11 points. Despite their early advantage and a 3-point lead with five minutes remaining, the Nittany Lions were unable to maintain control.

Ugochukwu’s decisive shooting helped Michigan State regain momentum early in the second half. His fourth three-pointer with 3:27 left on the clock gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. With just over two minutes remaining, he extended the lead to 72-67 with another deep shot.

Looking Ahead

As the game concluded, Dilione attempted to rally Penn State, hitting a jumper and a three-pointer to narrow the gap to two points. However, Ugochukwu sealed the victory with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.

Michigan State now turns its attention to their upcoming matchup against Toledo on March 19, while Penn State prepares to face Pitt on March 21 at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

This victory highlighted Michigan State’s resilience and the emergence of Ugochukwu as a key player, showcasing his potential as they progress through the season.
