URGENT UPDATE: Federal employees in Raleigh, N.C. are facing a critical food crisis, prompting local food banks to ramp up support. As these dedicated public servants line up for assistance, the situation is becoming increasingly dire.

“Seeing some of these dedicated volunteers, who are now in line for food assistance, is truly heart-wrenching,” stated Jason Kanawati Stephany, Vice President of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC. This alarming trend began several months ago, with a significant spike in requests for help.

According to Stephany, before recent cuts to SNAP grocery support and Medicaid healthcare coverage, more than 600,000 people were already facing food insecurity in the region. “Our pantries and meal sites were seeing 20 to 60 percent more people seeking food assistance than the same time last year,” he explained. With the ongoing government shutdown, those numbers have skyrocketed.

“If we don’t change course soon, this will push our emergency food assistance to a breaking point,” warned Stephany, emphasizing the urgent need for community support. The food bank is currently working tirelessly to help families keep food on the table, but the outlook remains grim without immediate action.

“Food remains available to all who need it through our system, at least for now. We are here for you. We are open,” he reassured those in need. Each donation can provide up to 5 meals for local families, highlighting the critical impact of community contributions. “We do need that help,” he stressed.

Authorities are urging the public to step in and assist local food banks in this time of crisis. Immediate donations have never been more vital as the food bank braces for a potential surge in demand. For those looking to help, you can learn how to donate and find a food pantry near you.

This developing situation underscores the urgent need for support in a community already grappling with a hunger crisis. As federal employees seek assistance, the ripple effects of government policies are becoming increasingly apparent, impacting families across the region.
