URGENT UPDATE: An 89-year-old Midvale man is facing serious charges after his granddaughter reported a horrific pattern of sexual abuse that spanned eight years, beginning over two decades ago. The Sandy Police Department has confirmed that the grandfather has been charged with three counts of rape of a child, three counts of sodomy upon a child, and three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all classified as first-degree felonies.

The victim, now 18 years old, disclosed to authorities that the abuse occurred “every weekend from the age of 5 to 13 years old,” specifically between 2003 and 2011. According to court documents, she reported that her grandfather would undress her and sexually assault her at his residence, detailing numerous instances of abuse that took place in various locations.

In a shocking revelation, the victim stated that her grandfather forced her to perform sexual acts and even use an adult toy that he owned. She described her time with him as a “typical day” filled with rape and sexual abuse. The abuse allegedly continued until she turned 13, at which point she confronted her grandfather and demanded that he stop.

Despite the trauma, the victim kept silent for years, fearing for her life and her family’s safety. She claimed her grandfather threatened to kill her and her mother if she ever spoke out about the abuse. As she matured, she confronted him, and he reportedly expressed remorse, stating he did not understand why he had abused her.

During a police interview, the grandfather admitted to inappropriately touching her and acknowledged the sexual abuse on at least one occasion. He has not been taken into custody but has been issued a summons to appear in court.

This case highlights the urgent need for awareness and action regarding child sexual abuse. Authorities are urging anyone who suspects abuse to report it immediately. For those in need, the DCFS 24/7 hotline is available at 855-323-3237.

As this case develops, the community remains on alert, grappling with the emotional impact of such egregious allegations. The legal proceedings will now determine the next steps, as the family seeks justice and healing from this traumatic experience.
