UPDATE: A coalition of lawmakers from 28 countries has just announced a powerful commitment to eradicate forced organ harvesting practices linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This urgent declaration came during the fifth annual summit of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) held in Brussels on November 8, 2023.

This vital push aims to draft and implement legislation that will prevent complicity in what has been described as a “state-sanctioned atrocity.” The lawmakers condemned the “abhorrent practice” of forced organ harvesting, primarily targeting prisoners of conscience, including members of the Falun Gong spiritual group.

The IPAC members vowed to champion laws that include a ban on transplant tourism, sanctions against perpetrators, and increased transparency in organ transplants. The implications of this pledge resonate deeply, as forced organ harvesting has reportedly been a significant issue in China since the 1990s, escalating dramatically in the 2000s alongside the CCP’s crackdown on the Falun Gong, which had grown to include an estimated 70 million to 100 million practitioners by 1999.

The China Tribunal, led by esteemed judge Geoffrey Nice, previously concluded that the CCP has committed torture and crimes against humanity through this horrific practice. Investigators also revealed that other ethnic groups, including the Uyghur people, have fallen victim to these human rights violations.

As the urgency of this issue escalates, several countries have already taken decisive action. The UK passed legislation in 2022 that prohibits residents from engaging in any transactions involving human organs globally. Additionally, two key bills in the United States — the Falun Gong Protection Act and the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act — successfully passed the House earlier this year.

In tandem with these developments, IPAC expressed strong opposition to any unilateral changes regarding Taiwan, reaffirming its commitment to international law and the rights of the Taiwanese people. They condemned actions that undermine Taiwan’s governance and international relations, calling for a proportionate response to violations of the status quo.

The stakes are high as lawmakers intensify their efforts against the CCP’s human rights violations. The global community is watching closely as these initiatives unfold. What happens next will be critical in the fight against forced organ harvesting and the broader implications for human rights in China.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more lawmakers join the fight and actions are taken to implement these much-needed reforms. The urgency of eradicating forced organ harvesting cannot be overstated, and your voice matters in raising awareness about this pressing issue.
