The fifth-seeded Hornets shut out the fourth-seeded Warriors in the second half, securing their spot in the state semifinal.

With their season on the line, North Reading’s defense stepped up dramatically, holding Medfield to just one first down in the third quarter. Coach Ed Blum praised his team’s resilience, stating, “The kids played great fundamental, team defense. It was incredible.”

Medfield, which boasted a powerful offense all season, took control early, leading 20-7 at halftime thanks to three rushing touchdowns from different players. However, North Reading made critical adjustments, with standout performances from players like Otto Indelicato, who scored twice as a wildcat quarterback, narrowing the gap to 20-14.

Quarterback Jason Berry ignited the Hornets’ second half, connecting with Brady McCormack for a crucial touchdown. Berry completed 19 of 25 passes for 224 yards, while McCormack caught 7 passes for 100 yards. The duo’s electric play culminated in a touchdown that gave North Reading the lead, with kicker Xander Villarroel successfully converting the extra point.

As the game neared its conclusion, Medfield pushed into North Reading’s territory, reaching the Hornets’ 18-yard line. However, North Reading’s defense held firm, forcing back-to-back incompletions and sealing the thrilling victory.

Blum highlighted the emotional drive behind the win: “When you get in moments of this adversity, it’s doing it for each other and digging a little deeper. They just had a little bit more.”
