Northland Music Community Mourns Todd Eckart, 61, After Tragedy
UPDATE: The Northland music community is in mourning following the tragic death of renowned Duluth singer-songwriter Todd Eckart, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Eckart was involved in a fatal collision on U.S. Highway 53, where his vehicle was struck by another driver traveling in the wrong direction. Both men died at the scene.
Eckart was a beloved figure in the Northland music scene, known for his vibrant performances and retro style. He frequently paid homage to music legends like Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, and Elvis Presley. “He liked vintage things,” said fellow musician Marvin Pomeroy. “Vintage clothing, vintage furniture, vintage architecture, vintage music.”
Born in Wells, Minnesota, Eckart moved to Duluth and became a prominent part of the music community after returning from Minneapolis in 1996. He performed under the name Hot Toddy, blending original songs with spirited covers. His style was described as “dreamy, cool rock,” and he was known for bringing his own flair to classic rock and roll.
Reflecting on their time together, Duluth guitarist Jimi Cooper shared, “Todd always made me laugh, and he was always fun to be around.” Eckart’s engaging stage presence made him stand out, and his personality captivated audiences. “He had personality galore,” Cooper added.
In addition to his musical talent, Eckart was a strong bandleader, guiding his fellow musicians with clarity and passion. He released his debut album, “Out of the Blue,” in 2018, which was praised for showcasing his dedication to the music he loved.
His impact extended beyond music; Aurora Baer, a fellow artist, recalled their memorable performances together, stating, “This is an incredible loss to all who knew him.” Baer emphasized Eckart’s kindness and encouragement, saying, “I always felt comfortable showing him my unfinished and unreleased work.”
In response to this sudden loss, Eckart’s daughter, Teri Timonen, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting the profound impact her father had on many lives through his music. “This loss is unimaginable and profound,” she wrote.
The Northland music community is urged to come together during this difficult time, celebrating Eckart’s legacy and contributions. His performances will be sorely missed, and tributes are expected to pour in as fans and fellow musicians honor his memory.
This developing story underscores the fragility of life and the powerful connections forged through music. The community is encouraged to support Timonen’s fundraiser and to share their memories of Eckart as they remember the joy he brought to countless audiences.
