Orlando Magic Fall to Hornets, Lacking Energy in 120-105 Loss
UPDATE: The Orlando Magic suffered a disappointing 120-105 loss to the Charlotte Hornets at the Kia Center on December 15, 2023, marking a significant setback in their season. The team struggled with energy and execution, allowing the Hornets to capitalize early and dominate throughout the game.
Despite coach Jamahl Mosley’s pre-game remarks about the Hornets’ 10-20 record not reflecting their capabilities, the Magic fell behind by as much as 24 points in the third quarter. Charlotte’s impressive rebounding, outpacing Orlando 53-42, and their 48.7% shooting from beyond the arc proved crucial in sealing the victory.
The Hornets had seven players scoring in double figures, led by LaMelo Ball with 22 points. In stark contrast, the Magic’s offensive struggles continued as they shot just 31.4% from three-point range, with key players Desmond Bane and Paolo Banchero failing to find their rhythm.
The Magic, now at 17-14, will face the Denver Nuggets on December 16 for the second game of a back-to-back. This matchup will be critical as the Nuggets previously defeated the Magic by 11 points on December 18.
Playing without key players Franz Wagner (left high ankle sprain) and Jalen Suggs (left hip bruise), Orlando relied on starting lineup members Tyus Jones and Anthony Black. Black, who had been on a scoring streak, managed to net 24 points but could not carry the team to victory.
The second unit’s performance was also underwhelming, with the Magic bench being outscored 41-29 by the Hornets. Tristan da Silva returned from injury but only contributed 8 points in the first half, and the rest of the bench failed to make a significant impact.
In a bright moment during halftime, the Magic participated in the NBA Cares Season of Giving by surprising a local family with a brand new 2026 Kia Sorento EX and $5,000 in home furnishings, showcasing the team’s commitment to community support.
As the Magic prepare for their next game against the Nuggets, fans are eager to see if the team can bounce back and regain their momentum. The urgency is palpable as Orlando looks to regroup and improve their performance on the court.
