Thousands of Sheep Set to Storm Brigham City This Saturday!
UPDATE: This Saturday, October 14, 2023, over 2,200 sheep will take over the streets of Brigham City, Utah, as part of a nearly century-old family tradition. This vibrant spectacle will unfold starting at 8:00 AM when the flock departs from Mantua, with a scheduled arrival time in Brigham City around 9:00 AM.
As the sheep march down Highway 89, the event is expected to draw enthusiastic crowds eager to witness this unique cultural heritage. The Jensen family, who have been herding sheep in this region since the 1930s, is excited to continue this cherished ritual that connects generations. “Each generation seems one step further removed from the agricultural history of the area,” stated Lane Jensen, Livestock Manager for the Jensen family.
The journey is not just a routine; it’s a heartfelt legacy. Lane Jensen highlighted his commitment to preserving the family’s agricultural heritage, saying, “It was the lifestyle and wanting to carry on the legacy and heritage of my grandfather.” His grandfather, Eph Jensen, began herding sheep nearly 100 years ago after serving in World War I.
The sheep’s journey from their summer grazing grounds in Cache County to their winter home near Bear River City spans 23 miles and takes place over two days, with the first day focusing on crossing backcountry routes. The second day will see the sheep navigating the westbound lanes of Highway 89, where traffic will be halted to ensure their safe passage.
Local excitement is palpable, with community members preparing to welcome the flock. “The ladies that work in the bank branch there in Brigham City were excited about it and stopped and asked if there was anything their kids could bring to help,” Jensen shared, indicating the community’s involvement. The presence of spectators helps keep the sheep on course, minimizing any potential disruptions.
Witnesses can follow the sheep as they head north on 600 East, turning west on 600 North before finally making their way to their winter grazing grounds. A detailed map of their route is available for those wishing to catch the action.
This beloved tradition not only highlights the agricultural history of Utah but also serves as a poignant reminder of the values passed down through generations. As the sheep prepare to make their way through Brigham City, the event promises to be a heartwarming blend of community and heritage.
Mark your calendars for this Saturday! The annual sheep march is not just an event; it’s a celebration of history, family, and the enduring bond between man and nature. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this extraordinary experience.
