Union Square Ice Rink Opens Today: Holiday Festivities Begin!
UPDATE: The festive spirit in San Francisco ignites as the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink, presented by Kaiser Permanente, officially opens today in Union Square! This marks the start of its 18th season, welcoming skaters from now until January 19, 2024.
As holiday cheer fills the air, locals and tourists alike are rushing to enjoy the rink’s vibrant atmosphere in the heart of the city’s bustling shopping district. The rink will be open daily from 10 AM to 11 PM, with a special 9:30 PM closure on New Year’s Eve.
The excitement doesn’t stop at skating. This year, visitors can participate in a variety of special events, including lessons, dance parties, and even drag performances that promise to add a unique flair to the traditional holiday experience.
Local businesses are also gearing up for increased foot traffic. Nnan Chotiphanomvivat, general manager of the Last Drop Tavern, expressed enthusiasm about the season: “It’s the most festive and vibrant time of the year for us.” The tavern is transforming into a holiday destination, complete with festive decorations and seasonal cocktails.
Adding to the festive offerings, the Beacon Grand Hotel is set to launch its Holiday Tea at The Post Room, featuring delectable treats like scones and eggnog cheesecake, starting the day after Thanksgiving.
In a broader context, Union Square is experiencing a notable economic revival. New openings, including a six-month pop-up location for Dandelion Chocolate and a rotating holiday food market, are part of the city’s Vacant to Vibrant initiative aimed at rejuvenating downtown spaces, as highlighted by KTVU.
The buzz around the rink’s reopening is underscored by Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, who praises the rink’s return as pivotal for the district’s ongoing resurgence. Anticipation grows with Macy’s commitment to reimagine its flagship store, a move that Rodriguez believes will enhance the iconic location’s appeal: “This is an iconic location in San Francisco. Why not reimagine it and meet the moment?”
Tickets for the ice rink are priced at $20 for adults and $15 for children aged eight and under. With the festive season underway, San Francisco’s Union Square is set to be the place to be, making it a must-visit location for holiday joy and activities.
Whether you’re looking to skate, sip festive drinks, or simply soak in the holiday atmosphere, the time to experience the magic of San Francisco is now! Don’t miss out on the festivities—head to Union Square today!
