UPDATE: A severe travel disruption is unfolding as the government shutdown continues, prompting airlines to cancel over 820 flights across the United States today alone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an emergency order mandating a 10% reduction in flights at 40 of the busiest airports, severely impacting travelers.

As of 6 a.m. ET today, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport leads the chaos with a staggering 76 flight cancellations, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. This airport, the world’s busiest and a key hub for Delta Air Lines, is experiencing unprecedented travel disruptions.

The emergency FAA order was announced on Thursday, following a significant increase in sick calls among air traffic controllers, who have been working without pay for 38 days. The ongoing situation is resulting in staffing shortages that are expected to worsen unless a resolution to the shutdown is reached.

Alongside Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare and Denver International Airports are also heavily affected, each reporting 66 cancellations. Both airports serve as major hubs for United Airlines, with O’Hare additionally hosting a significant presence of American Airlines.

The FAA’s order starts with an initial 4% reduction in flights, ramping up to the full 10% by November 14. This measure primarily affects regional and domestic flights, while international flights remain largely unaffected. However, the ripple effects of the shutdown are leading to hundreds of cancellations, with 202 flights canceled just yesterday.

Travelers are advised to check flight statuses frequently and be prepared for potential delays or cancellations. Most airlines have implemented waivers, enabling passengers to change or cancel their travel plans without penalties during this turbulent period. Furthermore, airlines are required to issue full refunds for canceled flights.

As public frustration grows, the impact of the shutdown on travel plans and personal lives is becoming increasingly apparent. Hundreds of thousands of passengers may find their holiday plans disrupted as cancellations continue to mount.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and travelers are urged to stay updated on the latest developments. With the FAA’s measures in effect and no end to the shutdown in sight, the number of canceled flights may continue to escalate, posing a significant threat to holiday travel.

Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds.
