Utes Gear Up for Crucial Showdown Against Cincinnati Saturday Night
UPDATE: The University of Utah Utes are preparing for a critical top-25 clash against the #17 Cincinnati Bearcats, set to kick off at 8:15 p.m. on October 28, 2023, at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Following an impressive 53-7 victory over Colorado, the Utes are riding a wave of momentum as they aim to solidify their position in the Big 12 standings.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham expressed confidence in his team’s performance, stating, “Just all positives. Really nothing negative coming out of that game.” The Utes’ defense shined with seven sacks and held Colorado to under 150 yards of total offense, showcasing their strength ahead of this pivotal match.
In a standout performance, Byrd Ficklin made his first career start in place of the injured Devon Dampier, rushing for 151 yards and a touchdown, along with throwing for two more touchdowns. This remarkable outing earned him the title of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. Ficklin reflected on the experience, saying, “My phone was blowing up. First start, first win, I was just enjoying the win with my teammates.”
As the Utes gear up for Cincinnati, the looming question remains: will Dampier return to the starting lineup? Whittingham noted, “[Dampier] has certainly been feeling better each day. But really, we’ll just have to see how he progresses.” The team is poised to adapt, ensuring Ficklin is ready to step up again if needed.
Adding to the excitement, ESPN’s College GameDay will return to the University of Utah for the sixth time. Despite a mixed record during prior visits, Whittingham is optimistic that the increased attention will boost rather than distract his players. “Those shows do a good job of not being a distraction for your guys. The biggest distraction is just knowing that they’re on center stage,” he explained.
The Utes (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) face a formidable opponent in Cincinnati (7-1, 5-0 Big 12), making this matchup vital for both teams’ aspirations in the conference. Fans are eager to see if the Utes can continue their winning streak and capitalize on their home-field advantage.
As the clock ticks down to kickoff, all eyes will be on Rice-Eccles Stadium, where the atmosphere promises to be electric. Expect a showdown filled with intensity, as both teams fight for crucial positioning in the Big 12. Don’t miss this high-stakes game that could redefine the season for the Utes!
