Bugatti Wraps Up Production of Final W-16 Bolide Track Car
UPDATE: Bugatti has officially ended the production of its final W-16 track car, the Bolide, as the 40th and last unit has been handed over to its owner today, marking a significant moment in automotive history. The final Bolide, priced at a staggering €4 million, was picked up directly from the factory in northeastern France, symbolizing the close of an era for the iconic W-16 engine.
The owner, a distinguished Bugatti collector, already boasts a classic Type 35 and a Veyron Grand Sport in their garage. This last Bolide features a striking Black Blue and Special Blue Lyonnais exterior, complemented by a luxurious Lake Blue Alcantara interior, making it a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Enthusiasts are already speculating whether any of the 40 Bolide owners will attempt to convert their cars for road use, especially after British engineering firm Lanzante announced its plans to assist in getting a Bolide licensed for the streets.
This pivotal moment in Bugatti’s legacy comes as customer deliveries of the Mistral, the final model to utilize the revered W-16 engine, are still in progress. The Mistral, a limited-run roadster capped at 99 units, began deliveries in February and will conclude the W-16’s reign, which started with the Veyron two decades ago.
Following the W-16’s departure, Bugatti is set to unveil a new V-16 engine for the upcoming Chiron-replacing Tourbillon, with deliveries expected to start next year. This innovative powertrain will feature a naturally aspirated setup, larger displacement of 8.4 liters, and a hybrid system to comply with stringent emissions regulations.
While the W-16 may be stepping aside, it could still capture headlines in the future. Bugatti has initiated the Programme Solitaire, aimed at creating bespoke commissions that will breathe new life into existing powertrains and chassis, similar to what Pagani has done. This initiative could see models like the Veyron and Chiron evolve with refreshed styling and updated technology, potentially becoming timeless classics that endure for years.
As the automotive world watches closely, Bugatti’s transition marks not only the end of an iconic engine era but also sets the stage for exciting innovations ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the future of Bugatti unfolds.
