Lake Taylor Titans Win Thrilling Double Overtime State Title
UPDATE: In a breathtaking showdown, the Lake Taylor Titans triumphed over Kettle Run 48-42 in double overtime to secure the Class 3 state championship at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium on December 9, 2023. This victory marks Lake Taylor’s fourth state title, a remarkable turnaround for a team that struggled last season.
The Titans, who finished last year with a disappointing three-win record, displayed incredible resilience in this high-stakes matchup. Quarterback Kevin Adams delivered a clutch 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end Casaun Hesson in the second overtime, sealing the victory and igniting celebrations among players and fans alike.
After a grueling battle characterized by 13 touchdowns and over 600 total yards of offense, Lake Taylor finished the season with a strong 13-2 record. The Titans’ coach, Hank Sawyer, celebrated his 250th career victory, an achievement few coaches can match.
“This win means everything,” said Adams. “After last year, we came together as a team. Coach Sawyer guided us, and we executed when it mattered.”
The Titans led early with a stunning 59-yard interception return for a touchdown by Devaughn Powell and a 53-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Ferebee. However, Kettle Run fought back with two touchdown passes from Dycen Tapscott, taking a 21-20 lead into halftime.
Tied 34-34 at the end of regulation, both teams scored in the first overtime, but Kettle Run faltered in the second. After a decisive sack by Lake Taylor’s Lataveon Hill, Adams intercepted a critical fourth-down pass, setting the stage for the Titans’ game-winning drive.
This victory not only highlights the Titans’ growth but also serves as a testament to Sawyer’s coaching prowess. “Last season was challenging,” Sawyer reflected. “But we persevered and proved our doubters wrong.”
As Lake Taylor celebrates this monumental win, they symbolize hope and resilience for their community, showcasing the power of determination and teamwork. The Titans will now look to build on this success in the coming seasons, aiming for further glory in Virginia high school football.
