Transforming Art into Data: Insights from Political History
Advancements in machine learning are revolutionizing the way researchers analyze visual data, particularly in the context of political history. According to Valentine Figuroa from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), paintings from both museums and private collections represent a largely unexplored source of information. Figuroa emphasizes that before applying computational methods, it is crucial to establish a framework for evaluating what this visual data encodes and the assumptions under which it can be interpreted.
Framework for Analysis of European Paintings
The article outlines a comprehensive framework designed to analyze a database containing 25,000 European paintings spanning from 1000 CE to the First World War. This framework is built on the enduring concerns of traditional humanities disciplines and facilitates the extraction of distinct types of information conveyed in paintings. Three specific applications are highlighted, each focusing on a different aspect of the cultural transformation during the early-modern period.
The first application revisits the concept of a European “civilizing process,” which refers to the internalization of stricter norms of behavior that coincided with the rise of state power. This analysis examines whether paintings depicting meals reflect increasingly complex etiquette over time. By analyzing the evolution of dining scenes, researchers can glean insights into societal changes and the growing importance of decorum in public life.
Portraits and Public Image of Political Elites
The second application focuses on portraits to investigate how political elites have historically shaped their public image. This study highlights a significant long-term shift from chivalric representations of men to more rational-bureaucratic portrayals. This transformation mirrors broader societal shifts, where the ideals of heroism and valor have been supplanted by representations emphasizing reason and governance.
The third application addresses the long-term process of secularization, measured by the proportion of religious paintings in the database. This analysis reveals that secularization began before the Reformation and accelerated in the subsequent years. By documenting this trend, researchers can better understand the broader cultural and religious shifts that influenced European society in the centuries leading to the modern age.
In conclusion, Figuroa’s work illustrates how the intersection of art and technology can yield significant insights into political history. By establishing a framework for interpreting visual data, researchers can uncover the underlying narratives in European paintings, providing a richer understanding of cultural transformations from the medieval period through to the First World War.
