Legendary Polka Musician John “Stanky” Stankovic Passes Away at 89
John “Stanky” Stankovic, renowned for his contributions to Polka music, passed away on December 25, 2023, at the age of 89. His family announced the news late Thursday night, marking the end of an era for the Polka community in Northeast Pennsylvania and beyond. Stankovic was the lead singer of the beloved band “Stanky and the Coal Miners,” a group that entertained audiences worldwide for decades.
Stankovic’s performances were a hallmark of local bazaars and international venues alike. His band became a staple on cruise ships, where they headlined excursions, bringing the spirit of Polka music to diverse audiences. In a heartfelt tribute on the band’s website, it was noted, “Every night Stanky ended the performance with the song ‘I don’t want to go home, don’t want to go home’ but today Stanky was called safely home.”
A Life of Music and Adventure
Born into a coal mining family, Stankovic’s journey into music began at a young age. His father, a coal miner, encouraged him to learn the accordion, suggesting that mastering ten songs could lead to a sustainable livelihood. Stankovic, ever ambitious, responded, “I’ll learn 11 and see the world.” His dedication to music took him on remarkable adventures, including performing at a festival in Tiananmen Square in China, which attracted an audience of over one million people.
Throughout his illustrious career, he chronicled his life in the autobiography “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie: The Story of Stanky and the Coal Miners.” His daughter, Debbie Stankovic Horoschock, who played trumpet in the band, highlighted the global reach of their music, stating, “We saw the entire world playing Polka music from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.”
Stankovic’s ability to perform in various locations, such as playing in England one day and South Korea the next, showcased his incredible work ethic and dedication to his craft. “He loved entertaining people. He loved being around people. He had a great love for life,” Horoschock reflected.
Legacy and Achievements
Stankovic’s contributions to Polka music earned him numerous accolades, including his induction into the International Polka Association’s Hall of Fame in August 2019. Additionally, he received various recognitions throughout his career, including a citation from the Pennsylvania Senate commemorating “Stanky and the Coal Miners” for over 55 years in the entertainment business.
For more than 60 years, his wife, Dottie Stankovic, was a steadfast supporter and performer alongside him. Known for her role as Luzerne County’s long-time elected register of wills, Dottie often joined the band on stage to sing, play the violin, and ring bells. Together, they hosted the “Pennsylvania Polka” show on WVIA public television, a program that showcased the joy of Polka dancing and music.
Stankovic began his musical journey with a band initially named the “Tip Toppers.” He later changed it to “Stanky and the Coal Miners,” a name that reflected both his heritage and the coal mining roots of his early bandmates. Stankovic often reminisced about picking up band members directly from the mines, recalling, “We used to pick them up and their faces were black, their clothes were black.”
The legacy of John “Stanky” Stankovic extends beyond his music. His vibrant personality, love for performance, and ability to connect with audiences have left an indelible mark on the world of Polka music. He will be remembered not only for his musical genius but also for the joy and unity he brought to countless fans around the globe.
