The Dickinson Press has welcomed Kelly Harju as its newest reporter, marking an exciting addition to the newsroom. Harju, originally from Pampanga in the Philippines, has embarked on a new journey in the rugged landscapes of North Dakota alongside her husband, Ben. Her transition comes after months of adjustment to life in the United States and a long-held aspiration to pursue a career in journalism.

With over a decade of professional writing experience, Harju’s passion for storytelling began in her childhood, fueled by a love for books. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communication, majoring in broadcasting and journalism. During her university years, she gained practical experience by serving as a features correspondent and later as managing editor of the campus newspaper. This exposure to campus journalism highlighted the vital role of journalists in serving the public by delivering truthful narratives.

Overcoming Challenges in Pursuit of Journalism

Despite her enthusiasm for journalism, Harju initially pursued a different career path, spending eight years in marketing. This diversion was influenced by the harsh realities faced by journalists in the Philippines. The 2009 Maguindanao massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 63 individuals, including 33 journalists, underscored the risks associated with the profession in regions marked by corruption and political oppression. Following this tragedy, the Philippines gained notoriety as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.

Reflecting on the dangers, Harju recalls the words of Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, who posed the poignant question: “What are you willing to sacrifice for the truth?” This inquiry has lingered in Harju’s mind, shaping her resolve to return to journalism with a renewed sense of purpose.

Commitment to Public Service Journalism

Now, as a member of The Dickinson Press team, Harju is determined to embrace the responsibilities tied to public service journalism. She aims to ask difficult questions and provide accurate, informative reporting that contributes to making Dickinson a great place to live. Harju encourages community members to share their stories or information that may benefit the public, inviting collaboration in service of the community.

As she begins this new chapter in her career, Harju’s commitment to serving the public through journalism is evident. With her rich background and dedication, she is poised to make a meaningful impact at The Dickinson Press and within the broader community.
