The outdoor ice-skating rink in Monument Square, Leominster, remains closed as residents await colder temperatures necessary for safe skating. Currently marked by a red stop sign, the rink will open to the public once it freezes solid, at which point a green sign will signal the welcome for community enjoyment.

The city’s Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for setting up the rink each winter. This year, the team, led by longtime Highway Construction Foreman Kevin Iannacone, has worked diligently to create a rink that is twice the size of previous installations. Iannacone, a lifelong resident of Leominster, highlights the effort and dedication of his team in constructing the wood-lined skating area, which aims to enhance the winter experience for locals.

Despite the current warm weather and the presence of the stop sign, anticipation remains high among residents. The DPW monitors weather conditions closely, ready to prepare the rink for skating as soon as the temperature drops sufficiently.

Once operational, the rink will serve as a central hub for winter activities in Leominster, drawing families and friends together to enjoy ice skating in a festive atmosphere. The community eagerly awaits the day when they can lace up their skates and take to the ice.
