UPDATE: Construction on Tampa’s ambitious West Riverwalk Project is set to kick off in November 2025, with a budget exceeding $56.8 million. This major initiative aims to connect neighborhoods along the Hillsborough River and enhance public access to the waterfront, according to the City of Tampa.

City leaders, in collaboration with the design-build firm Haskell, hosted a public information meeting last night to outline the construction timeline and address community concerns. The project, once completed, will feature a 12.2-mile multi-use trail that includes a two-mile Riverwalk along the west bank of the river, linking key areas such as West Tampa, Hyde Park, Bayshore Boulevard, and the historic Ybor City.

“This project is vital for stitching together the neighborhoods on the west side of the river,” stated Brandon Campbell, Interim Mobility Director for the City of Tampa. The initiative will also provide safer pathways for various users, including pedestrians and cyclists, addressing the growing demand for active transportation options in a rapidly developing area.

Construction will unfold in six segments, with the first phase focusing on creating approximately five miles of the multimodal network. Notably, segment five will reduce traffic lanes on the bridge between North Rome Avenue and North Riverside Drive from four to three, reallocating space for safer access for all users.

Nina Mabilleau, Transportation Project Coordinator, emphasized the importance of safety: “We’re working to separate motor vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists to enhance safety for everyone.”

However, not all community members are in favor of the changes. Residents like JR Kozera voiced concerns about potential traffic congestion, stating, “I think it’s just going to wreak havoc.” Additionally, Dianne McNeilly raised privacy issues, questioning the impact on homeowners near the new trail.

The City of Tampa aims to complete the West Riverwalk Project by early 2027. As construction approaches, residents are encouraged to stay informed and involved in the planning process.

This development is crucial for Tampa’s urban landscape, promising to reshape how residents and visitors interact with the city’s waterfront and enhance overall community connectivity. Stay tuned for more updates as construction progresses!
