Jets Trade Quinnen Williams to Cowboys in Major Roster Shakeup
The New York Jets have made a significant move in their roster rebuild by trading defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. This decision follows a series of trades, including the recent exchange of cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts. The Jets received two first-round draft picks and wide receiver Adonai “AD” Mitchell in that deal. In return for Williams, the Jets acquired the Cowboys’ first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2026, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
This trade marks a pivotal moment for a Jets team struggling with a record of 1-7 in the 2025 NFL season. The Jets’ decision to part ways with Williams stems from a deteriorating relationship between the player and the organization. Williams had expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s handling of former quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and a contract renegotiation that was rejected further strained his ties to the Jets.
Williams’ desire for a fresh start became apparent as the Jets entered their bye week. According to NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY, Williams indicated to those close to him that he had little interest in extending his contract with the Jets, which has only $5 million remaining in guaranteed salary after this season. Ultimately, he found a new home with the Cowboys, a team in urgent need of defensive reinforcement. “His preferred destination was the Cowboys — a feeling that, clearly, was mutual,” Hughes reported.
Implications for the Jets’ Future
The trades signal a clear message to both players and fans: the Jets are open to significant changes. Before the announcement of the Williams trade, Hughes noted that the Gardner deal indicated that “everybody is on the table for the Jets.” The new leadership under head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey has acquired valuable assets that could facilitate the acquisition of a franchise quarterback in the upcoming draft classes. The Jets now hold:
– Two first-round picks in 2026
– Two second-round picks in 2026
– Three first-round picks in 2027
These moves indicate a long-term strategy for a franchise looking to rebuild and improve its fortunes.
The Jets’ recent decisions also suggest that both Glenn and Mougey are not in immediate danger of being dismissed, even with the team’s disappointing record. In October, Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed his continued support for Glenn despite the team’s struggles.
This reshaping of the roster raises questions about the evaluation of talent inherited by the current management. Analyst Albert Breer remarked that trading two of the team’s highest-paid players, both under 27 years old, suggests a belief that the previous roster was overrated. Whether this assessment holds true will likely be debated among analysts and fans alike as the Jets move forward in their rebuilding efforts.
The trade of Quinnen Williams marks a significant chapter in the Jets’ ongoing efforts to revitalize their team. As the organization seeks to reshape its future, the next draft will be crucial in determining whether these strategic moves will lead to a more competitive squad in the seasons to come.
