Hundreds of Whaler Sharks Sighted Off Queensland Coast, Expert Issues Warning
A spectacular gathering of hundreds of whaler sharks has been documented off the coast of Queensland, Australia, near the popular tourist destination of Moreton Island. This stunning sight was captured on video by a shark-watching professional using a drone, who shared the footage on the Instagram account @dronesharkapp. The event has drawn attention not only for its visual impact but also for the insights it provides into marine ecosystems.
The phenomenon is believed to have been triggered by a large bait ball, consisting primarily of sardines. Bait balls are formations of schooling fish that swim in unison, creating confusion for predators. When sharks congregate in significant numbers, the grouping is known as a “shiver.” Such gatherings are indicative of a healthy marine environment, according to shark expert Dr. Daryl McPhee from Bond University, who spoke to 7NEWS.
While the sight of these apex predators is captivating, Dr. McPhee advises caution for onlookers. He emphasized that the species of sharks present can vary throughout the day, which poses potential risks for those venturing into the water. “It’s something that really should be appreciated, but there’s no way anybody should be getting in the water around those bait balls, no matter where they are,” he stated. His warning highlights the need for both tourists and photographers to maintain a safe distance from the feeding frenzy.
The video has gained significant traction on social media, with many viewers expressing their astonishment at the sheer number of sharks. Footage like this not only showcases the beauty of marine life but also serves as a reminder of the delicate balance within ocean ecosystems.
In related news, a notable event occurred with the largest male great white shark in Atlantic history, known as Contender. This shark, measuring approximately 14 feet in length and weighing around 1,653 pounds, was recently pinged off the coast of Canada. The last recorded location was near Pointe-Parent, Quebec, on September 29, 2025, according to research organization OCEARCH.
As shark populations continue to be a subject of both fascination and concern, sightings like the one near Moreton Island contribute valuable data for ongoing studies. These occurrences not only enrich our understanding of marine wildlife but also highlight the importance of preserving natural habitats.
