Immigrant Founders Share Insights for Success in Silicon Valley

Vasyl Dub, a startup mentor at Stanford University and founder of Raisable Founders Hub, reflects on the challenges and lessons learned as an immigrant entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. In his experience, navigating this competitive landscape requires an understanding of its unique culture and networking dynamics.
Despite the recent **$100,000 application fee** imposed by former President Donald Trump on new H-1B visas, San Francisco continues to attract international talent, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. Dub moved from Ukraine to the Bay Area in 2017 to scale his startup, Animal ID. His journey, however, was not without its difficulties. After facing numerous rejections, he returned home feeling disheartened.
Reflecting on his experiences, Dub emphasizes that understanding the unspoken rules of Silicon Valley was crucial to his eventual success. Through his role as a mentor, he aims to equip other founders, especially immigrants, with the knowledge to avoid the common pitfalls he encountered.
Key Principles for Success in Silicon Valley
Dub’s approach centers around a few fundamental principles: shifting one’s mindset, building a relevant network, validating ideas, and developing a clear strategy. He notes that trusting relationships are foundational in Silicon Valley and should be cultivated well before arriving. Conducting thorough research and connecting with potential contacts online can pave the way for future collaborations.
“Building a startup here is different from anywhere else,” Dub explains. “The extreme costs, fierce competition, and rapid pace of innovation can test your adaptability, which is a critical skill investors seek.”
He encourages newcomers to surround themselves with individuals who will challenge and support their ambitions. “Don’t chase generic networking opportunities,” he advises. Instead, engage intentionally with communities that resonate with one’s mission—whether that be fellow entrepreneurs, AI enthusiasts, or other immigrant founders.
Offering value from the outset can lead to more meaningful connections. Dub suggests sharing expertise and actively participating in discussions, rather than focusing solely on personal gain.
The Importance of Authentic Connections
Dub highlights the importance of seeking advice before asking for introductions to investors. Many founders obsess over networking for fundraising, but he believes that a well-prepared pitch is more beneficial than a mere introduction. Engaging in insightful conversations allows entrepreneurs to refine their value propositions and gain important feedback.
“Seek out great mentors,” he adds. “The best mentors don’t provide all the answers; they help you ask better questions.”
Recognizing that not every interaction should lead to immediate fundraising can also open doors to unexpected opportunities. A new connection might evolve into a future co-founder, advisor, or customer.
As the landscape of startup funding evolves, Dub’s insights serve as a guide for emerging entrepreneurs navigating the complexities of Silicon Valley. His mission to support fellow immigrant founders is rooted in the belief that understanding the ecosystem can significantly enhance their chances of success.
In conclusion, Dub’s journey illustrates that while the path to success in Silicon Valley may be fraught with challenges, a strategic mindset and a commitment to building authentic relationships can make all the difference.
