The popular sitcom Abbott Elementary is set to air a Halloween-themed episode on October 29, showcasing teacher Barbara, played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, as she attempts to guide her students toward safe and enjoyable activities. In a sneak peek shared by Us Weekly, Barbara learns that her students are considering plans that include vandalism, prompting her to intervene and redirect their energy into something more constructive.

During the episode, Barbara discusses Halloween with the class, only to discover that the children feel they are “too old” for traditional trick-or-treating. Instead, they propose plans such as toilet papering houses, egging apartments, and engaging in the classic prank of ding-dong ditch. Disturbed by these ideas, Barbara exclaims, “No! Is there any way for us to be outside with it without vandalism?” One student even mentions the possibility of starting a small fire, which further alarms her.

Creative Solutions for Halloween

Barbara quickly devises a creative solution to keep the students occupied while avoiding illegal activities. She suggests, “If you like fire, being outside and holding onto rolls of toilet paper, why don’t we go on a camping trip?” The idea excites the children, although a few still express a desire to “throw eggs at something.” Barbara promises to consider their input as she plans the camping trip.

The episode, which focuses on Barbara’s camping plans, will also involve other teachers at the school, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the series. Since its debut in 2021, Abbott Elementary has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, including prestigious Golden Globe and Emmy awards, solidifying its place in contemporary television.

Reflections from Sheryl Lee Ralph

Before the fifth season premiered last month, Sheryl Lee Ralph, 68, spoke with Us Weekly about her character’s journey. “I can tell you absolutely nothing because I know absolutely nothing [about Barbara’s arc]. Be very afraid,” she teased, expressing confidence in the show’s continued success. “After the first season, I knew in my heart, in my mind and in my spirit that there would be a season 5.”

Ralph also reflected on her legacy as an actress after a 40-year career in Hollywood. “My legacy is about the life I’ve been able to lead,” she stated. “It would be my children. My children are my greatest legacy. I met Cicely Tyson on a plane once. She said, ‘Sheryl, you are going to do wonderful things, but your children will be some of the greatest things you ever do.’” Ralph shares her son Etienne, 33, and daughter Ivy Coco, 30, with ex-husband Eric Maurice. She emphasized the importance of children in her life, remarking, “When I’m no longer here, I will leave two wonderful people to speak my name.”

Ralph encourages audiences to prioritize their well-being, stating, “Thriving after 50 means you are going to take the wise step to prioritize yourself, prioritize your health, and really, really pay attention to it.” Her advice includes simple but powerful messages: “Relax. Listen to your doctors. Drink that water; keep it moving. Take a moment to enjoy nature. Look at the flowers, smell the grass, smell the air — no matter how polluted it is. You’re alive. Enjoy every moment.”

Abbott Elementary airs on ABC every Wednesday at 20:30 ET and is available for streaming on Hulu the following day, ensuring fans can catch all the latest adventures of Barbara and her dedicated team of educators.
