Luigi Mangione, currently incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, has found unexpected solace in the music of pop stars Taylor Swift and Charli XCX. In a letter recently verified by TMZ, he expressed gratitude for their songs, specifically mentioning Swift’s track “Cardigan.” Although Mangione admitted he had not previously listened to their music, he decided to explore their discography after a fabricated list of his “favorite artists” circulated online.

In his correspondence, Mangione detailed his experience of downloading music onto his prison tablet. He described how he began listening to “Cardigan” while walking laps in the facility. However, his musical journey took an unexpected turn when an inmate known as “King” critiqued his song choices. Mangione reported that “King” was dismissive of his playlist and subsequently introduced him to the music of rapper Lil Durk.

Beyond his musical explorations, Mangione also reflected on the small comforts he appreciates while serving time. He mentioned being thankful for the meals provided and for receiving letters from fans, indicating that these gestures have helped him cope with his situation.

Luigi Mangione faces serious legal challenges, charged with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the former CEO of UnitedHealthcare, on December 4, 2024. If convicted in the federal case, Mangione could face a potential death penalty for the murder charge involving a firearm. Despite the gravity of his situation, his letter reveals a human side, showcasing how even in difficult circumstances, music can provide a source of comfort and connection.

Attempts to reach Mangione’s representatives for further comment have not yielded a response.
