“Malcolm in the Middle” Revival Set for April 2026 on Hulu
Fans of early-2000s television can rejoice as the beloved sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” makes a much-anticipated return. Hulu has officially announced a four-episode revival titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” set to premiere on April 10, 2026. This marks the first time the series will be on-screen since its original run concluded in 2006.
Key Cast Members Reunite for the Revival
The revival brings back several major stars from the original Fox series. Viewers can look forward to seeing Bryan Cranston reprise his role as Hal, Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, and Frankie Muniz returning as the central character, Malcolm. While many of Malcolm’s siblings are also set to return, Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, will not be part of the revival. Instead, the role has been recast with actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark following Sullivan’s departure from acting years ago.
The new storyline takes place nearly two decades after the Wilkerson family last graced television screens, focusing on Malcolm’s return home to celebrate Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary. The revival will also introduce fresh characters, including Malcolm’s daughter, played by Keeley Karsten, and his girlfriend, portrayed by Kiana Madeira.
Disney’s Strategy Focuses on Nostalgia
The revival is part of Disney’s broader strategy to capitalize on nostalgia, following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s television assets in 2019. With research indicating that 60% of all television viewing now comprises library content, Disney has noted that Gen Z audiences are particularly drawn to older shows that provide comfort and familiarity. “Malcolm in the Middle” fits seamlessly into Disney’s initiative for feel-good television that appeals across generations, much like its upcoming revival of “Scrubs,” which is set to return with the original cast in February 2026.
In preparation for the revival, the production team, led by Disney Television Studios and New Regency, has recreated the iconic Wilkerson home, which had undergone significant renovations. The new set is designed to capture the original ambiance, ensuring that long-time fans recognize the familiar setting.
Behind the scenes, series creator Linwood Boomer is returning as writer and executive producer, aiming to preserve the original series’ spirit and tone. Ken Kwapis, the director known for his work on the classic series, will helm all four episodes of the revival.
With a strong cast, a beloved setting, and a creative team that shaped the series’ unique voice, “Life’s Still Unfair” is poised to provide an engaging reunion for dedicated fans while introducing the chaotic charm of the Wilkerson family to new audiences.
