Newark Jazz Nights to Thrive with Two Exciting Shows in 2026
The popular live jazz nights in Newark will continue into 2026, solidifying their place in the town’s entertainment calendar. Launched last summer by musician Andrew Wood and his partner Lara Waldrom, Newark Jazz has already garnered a dedicated following, with successful events in both the summer and October. As they look to build on this momentum, the organizers are set to kick off the new year with two exciting performances.
Upcoming Shows Highlight Renowned Talent
The first event will take place on January 30, 2026, featuring acclaimed UK jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi. Known for his expressive style and deep roots in jazz, Kofi has received multiple awards and has collaborated with some of the most respected names in the genre. His quartet will perform a selection of works by legendary musicians such as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, promising an engaging evening of music. Doors open at 19:00, with the concert commencing at 20:00. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
Following Kofi’s performance, on March 13, 2026, the house band from Nottingham’s Peggy’s Skylight jazz club will present a show titled “Disney Meets Jazz.” This unique performance will infuse beloved Disney songs with a jazz twist, creating an entertaining atmosphere that appeals to audiences of all ages. Songs like “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat” and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” will be reimagined through both vocal and instrumental jazz interpretations.
Aiming for a Lasting Jazz Tradition
Andrew Wood previously launched a similar event in Stamford in 2018, which has since become a well-regarded fixture in that community. He and Lara Waldrom are optimistic about replicating this success in Newark. They envision Newark Jazz becoming a staple of the local cultural scene, stating, “We’d love Newark Jazz to feel like a real fixture at the Town Hall—something people recognize and genuinely look forward to.”
With a beautiful venue that enhances the experience, the organizers are eager to foster a regular audience. “We’re already seeing that after just two events,” they noted. Engaging with attendees has been a priority, with both Wood and Waldrom actively seeking feedback on future programming. “We want to put on events people truly want, and audience input is a big part of that,” they emphasized.
The response to the initial performances has been overwhelmingly positive, fueling excitement for the upcoming shows. With numerous ideas for future events, the team is committed to showcasing both local and national jazz talent. As Newark Jazz continues to develop, the hope is to create a vibrant jazz community that resonates with both residents and visitors alike.
Tickets for Kofi’s show and the Disney-themed performance are now available via Eventbrite, providing an opportunity for jazz enthusiasts and newcomers to enjoy memorable musical experiences at Newark Town Hall.
