The classic ballet, The Nutcracker, has made its much-anticipated return to the stage of the Royal Opera House this holiday season. Staged by Sir Peter Wright, this enchanting production has delighted audiences for over 40 years. It is particularly well-suited as a family-friendly experience and serves as an excellent introduction to ballet for young children.

This iteration of The Nutcracker maintains the charm of its original 1984 premiere, featuring exquisite set designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman and the beloved score by P.I. Tchaikovsky. The narrative revolves around Clara and her magical nutcracker, a gift from the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer. With the retirement of Gary Avis, who has long portrayed Drosselmeyer, the role is poised for a transition. During a recent performance, Thomas Whitehead delivered a captivating portrayal, blending benevolence with an air of mystery.

The role of Clara was performed by Bomin Kim, whose youthful exuberance contrasted beautifully with her character’s growing awareness of adulthood. Uniquely, the principal dancers—the Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy—do not appear until Act II, where they showcase their celebrated pas de deux. Sarah Lamb danced with grace and precision, particularly enjoying the adage with her slow leg extensions. Her partner, Ryoichi Hirano, executed challenging lifts and displayed remarkable skill in his variation.

While Lamb’s variation was charming, it notably lacked the intricate gargouillades for which it is known. Despite this, the performance was augmented by the enchanting sounds of the celesta. Among the evening’s highlights, the Waltz of the Snowflakes stood out, showcasing the corps de ballet in a stunning display of talent.

For those unable to attend a performance at the Royal Opera House, alternative productions are available. The Birmingham Royal Ballet, another company under the Royal Ballet banner, is currently performing its own version of The Nutcracker at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Additionally, at the end of December, they will stage a cleverly reimagined version at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.

The Acosta Danza company is also touring with a vibrant Cuban rendition titled Nutcracker in Havana, while the English National Ballet presents its own interpretation at the London Coliseum. Ballet enthusiasts have a wealth of options to choose from this festive season, ensuring a delightful experience for all.
