Haiti’s Transitional Council Dissolves, PM Fils-Aime Takes Charge
Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) has officially dissolved, handing power to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime. This decision, made on Saturday, marks a significant shift in the Caribbean nation’s governance amid ongoing political and social unrest. The CPT, which was installed in November 2024, was intended to stabilize a country plagued by gang violence but ultimately fell short of meeting the needs of the Haitian people.
The dissolution of the CPT comes as Haiti continues to grapple with rampant gang-related violence. According to a report from the United Nations, criminal organizations exert control over nearly 90 percent of Port-au-Prince. The situation has escalated tragically, with gangs responsible for at least 4,384 deaths between January and September 2025, along with 1,899 injuries and 491 kidnappings.
The CPT’s failure to foster stability has been highlighted by its authorization of aerial drone attacks, which resulted in the deaths of at least 494 people. Although these attacks primarily targeted alleged gang members, innocent civilians, including seven children, were among the casualties. This pattern of violence has intensified following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in 2021, an event that left a power vacuum and heightened instability throughout the country.
Since assuming the role of prime minister in November 2024, Fils-Aime has received backing from the United States. His leadership was brought into question earlier this year when the CPT attempted to remove him from office. In response, Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, publicly supported Fils-Aime, warning of serious consequences for “corrupt politicians” who align with gangs. This political backing has been critical for Fils-Aime as he steps into this renewed leadership role.
The situation in Haiti has drawn international attention, particularly after the U.S. Department of War deployed three warships to the bay of Port-au-Prince in a recent operation aimed at combating drug trafficking and enhancing security. The U.S. government has expressed a commitment to ensuring a safer and more prosperous Haiti as the country prepares for its first general elections in a decade.
The dissolution of the Transitional Presidential Council underscores a pivotal moment for Haiti as it navigates through a complex landscape of violence and political instability. With the appointment of Fils-Aime as acting head of state, the international community will closely monitor how his administration addresses the pressing challenges facing the nation.
