Washington Township Votes on Avon Schools Funding Referendum
Washington Township voters are at the polls today, March 15, 2024, to decide on the renewal of a funding referendum for Avon Schools, which has been in place since 2018. The proposal seeks to continue a property tax of 33 cents per $100 of assessed value for another eight years, slightly reduced from the current rate by two cents. The district asserts that these funds are essential for supporting teacher salaries, maintaining smaller class sizes, and enhancing classroom programs.
Early voting data indicates that 3,825 ballots were cast, with over 2,000 individuals having voted in person by late afternoon. Polls are set to close at 18:00, with results expected by 20:00.
Community Perspectives on the Referendum
Supporters of the referendum, including parents and community members, emphasize its importance for the educational environment. “It is vitally important that we maintain what we started out with in 2018,” said Sarah Parent, an Avon parent and school board member. “We need to maintain reasonable class sizes and the opportunities for students.”
Conversely, opponents like voter Betsy Potter express concerns about the financial impact on families. “They don’t seem to really care about the fact that I have to find the money,” she stated, highlighting the burden of increased taxation on residents.
This referendum is the sole issue on the ballot for this election, and all registered voters residing in Washington Township are eligible to participate. The outcome will significantly influence the future funding and resources available for Avon Schools.
The decision today reflects broader discussions about school funding and community priorities, as residents weigh the benefits of educational investment against personal financial constraints. With the polls closing soon, the community awaits the results that will determine the future of school funding in the area.
