Giants Near Deal to Hire John Harbaugh as Head Coach
The New York Giants are progressing toward securing former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh as their next head coach. Negotiations have intensified, with multiple sources indicating that an agreement could be finalized soon. Although no contract has been formally signed and discussions on terms are ongoing, there is a growing belief that Harbaugh will become the 24th head coach in the franchise’s history.
The Giants have made their intentions clear since Harbaugh parted ways with the Ravens on January 6, 2026. Identifying him as their primary target to replace Brian Daboll, the team wasted no time in initiating talks. On Wednesday, Harbaugh was flown to the Giants’ East Rutherford facility on a private plane owned by co-owner Steve Tisch for an in-person interview. This meeting included discussions with general manager Joe Schoen, ownership, and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, whose potential is viewed as an attractive aspect for the incoming coach.
Negotiations are reportedly heating up, with a strong push from the Giants to prevent Harbaugh from engaging with other interested teams, including the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. The Giants’ leadership is keenly aware of the significance of this potential hire, marking a substantial shift for a franchise that has cycled through four head coaches since 2017.
While earlier speculation suggested friction between Harbaugh and Schoen, sources indicate that this was unfounded. Reports reveal that Schoen has maintained regular contact with Harbaugh’s representatives, and even former coach Daboll endorsed the collaborative environment within the organization. The Giants organization has mobilized its resources, with senior personnel consultant Chris Mara personally meeting Harbaugh in Baltimore. Additionally, franchise legends Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning have reached out to advocate for the team.
If the agreement is finalized, the Giants will gain a coach with an impressive record of 180-113 during regular seasons and a victory in Super Bowl XLVII. Harbaugh’s leadership style, characterized as a “CEO type” with a background in special teams, contrasts with the offensive or defensive specialists the Giants have employed in recent years. For a fanbase yearning for success after a 2-8 start last season and a 3-14 finish the year before, Harbaugh’s proven track record offers hope and credibility.
While excitement builds, sources caution that the deal is not yet official. “There still is a lot to work through,” one source noted, mentioning that contract terms could potentially reach $20 million per year. Nonetheless, the momentum appears to be in New York’s favor. With the Giants committing significant resources to this pursuit, an official announcement is anticipated soon, as both parties work to finalize the terms of the contract.
