Guerrero’s Home Run Shifts Momentum in World Series Game 4
LOS ANGELES — In a pivotal moment of the World Series, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered a game-changing home run against renowned pitcher Shohei Ohtani in the third inning of Game 4. This crucial swing propelled the Toronto Blue Jays to a lead they would not relinquish, especially after they faced a heartbreaking defeat just hours earlier in an 18-inning game. The victory not only tied the series at two games apiece but also spotlighted Guerrero as a key player in this championship matchup.
Manager John Schneider highlighted the significance of Guerrero’s performance. “That swing was huge,” he said, referring to the critical home run. “A sweeper is a pitch designed to generate popups, and the swing that Vlad put on it was elite. After last night and all the recognition that went into Shohei individually, it’s a huge swing from Vlad. It gives us some momentum.”
Throughout the postseason, Guerrero has shown extraordinary prowess, hitting .419 with seven home runs. His skills extend beyond just power hitting; he is also recognized for his defensive capabilities and baserunning, making him a well-rounded player. Max Scherzer, a veteran pitcher and future Hall of Famer, praised Guerrero’s all-around game, stating, “He’s just locked and loaded… To me, his greatness is beyond his offense.”
Guerrero’s hitting coach, David Popkins, expressed admiration for his star player. “It’s pretty much enjoying the show, grabbing some popcorn and watching him do his thing,” Popkins said. He emphasized that Guerrero often anticipates adjustments before they can be made, showcasing his exceptional understanding of the game.
Guerrero’s Impact on the Blue Jays
Teammates like closer Jeff Hoffman echoed this sentiment, revealing that they are often on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting Guerrero’s next move. “It’s a quality at-bat every time,” third baseman Ernie Clement noted. He emphasized Guerrero’s ability to battle at the plate, making it challenging for opposing pitchers. “This postseason is the most amazing baseball I’ve ever seen from him,” Clement added.
Guerrero’s performance has been even more impressive considering the pressure of a recent $500 million contract, which will keep him with the Blue Jays through the 2039 season. Despite the heightened expectations, he has consistently delivered exceptional results. In the postseason, he has maintained a .529 batting average in the division series, .385 in the ALCS, and is currently hitting .368 in the World Series.
Reflecting on his recent success after the home run against Ohtani, Guerrero remarked, “That I am helping my team win some games. That’s what I’m impressed with right now.” His teammates have recognized his relentless pursuit of excellence, with Popkins stating, “He never settles… He’s special in that manner.”
The Rivalry with Ohtani
As the series progresses, the rivalry between Guerrero and Ohtani continues to capture attention. Following Game 3, where Ohtani reached base a record nine times, Guerrero’s home run in Game 4 shifted the narrative. “It was very important for me to hit that home run,” Guerrero said, acknowledging the competitive spirit shared between the two superstars. “When we are between those two lines, we’re competing.”
Even fellow players are aware of the challenge Guerrero presents. Relief pitcher Eric Lauer humorously admitted he would likely “pitch around him,” acknowledging Guerrero’s impressive bat path and hitting ability. “Whenever he comes up, we’re just like, ‘Hang a slider or a curveball. Hang something. Or throw a fastball down the middle and see how far that goes.'”
As the series unfolds, Guerrero’s contributions continue to be pivotal for the Blue Jays, who are vying for their first championship since 1993. The excitement surrounding his performances only adds to the drama of the World Series, making each game a must-watch event for fans.
