High School Football Playoff Picture Takes Shape in Week 9
As the regular season of high school football in Massachusetts reaches its conclusion, teams are preparing for a pivotal Week 9. The upcoming matches will determine which squads secure their places in the state playoffs, set to begin next weekend. The top 16 ranked teams across eight divisions automatically qualify, provided they have achieved at least three wins.
This week, eight teams are confirmed in the playoffs, while three others are on the cusp of qualification, and another three are vying for consolation matchups. Starting with Chelmsford’s game on Wednesday, the stakes are high for teams across the state.
Division Insights and Key Matchups
In Division 1, the Lowell Red Raiders currently hold the No. 10 spot. A victory against the struggling North Andover team, which has only one win, should secure their playoff berth. If the standings remain unchanged, Lowell would face No. 7 Wachusett Regional in the first round.
Meanwhile, Division 2’s Billerica Indians sit at No. 7 and will host Wellesley if the playoffs started today. However, they face a formidable opponent in Methuen, who is currently on a winning streak. A win could elevate Billerica’s position in the rankings.
The Chelmsford Lions, holding the No. 9 position, also have a favorable matchup against Lawrence. A victory could either propel them to No. 7 or drop them to No. 10, impacting their playoff draw against No. 1 ranked St. John’s Prep.
Westford Academy is in a precarious situation at No. 15, needing a win against Concord-Carlisle to keep their playoff hopes alive. A loss would likely result in a difficult first-round matchup against Bishop Feehan.
In Division 4, Tewksbury is positioned second and faces its toughest test against Andover, a game that could potentially secure them the top seed. Tewksbury’s head coach, Brian Aylward, acknowledges the challenge, stating, “Andover is a really tough challenge but also a great opportunity to play one of the top tier teams in the state heading into the playoffs.”
Notable Performances and Remaining Schedule
The standout performance last week came from Lowell’s Joshua Amaakwaah, who scored four rushing touchdowns in a decisive victory. As teams prepare for their final regular season games, the schedule is packed with crucial matchups.
On Wednesday, Chelmsford (3-4) will host Lawrence (1-6). Thursday features several key games, including Billerica (4-3) at Methuen (6-1) and Shawsheen Tech (7-0) visiting Greater Lowell (3-4). Friday’s highlight is the Tewksbury (7-0) versus Andover (5-2) clash, while other notable games include Lowell at North Andover and Wilmington at Watertown.
As the season nears its conclusion, the excitement builds. With playoff spots on the line, teams are determined to secure their futures in the postseason, making for a thrilling finish to the regular season.
