Rocco Commisso, the influential owner of the Italian soccer club Fiorentina and chairman of Mediacom Communications, has passed away at the age of 76. His death was announced on Saturday by both Fiorentina and Mediacom, although no cause of death has been provided. The club expressed its sorrow, stating, “After a prolonged period of medical treatment, our beloved president has left us, and today we all mourn his passing. His love for Fiorentina was the greatest gift he gave himself.”

Born in Calabria, Italy, Commisso immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. He transformed Mediacom into one of the largest cable television providers in the country before acquiring Fiorentina in 2019. His outspoken nature often led him to criticize Italy’s bureaucratic hurdles, particularly regarding the construction of new stadiums.

Legacy in Sports and Business

Commisso’s impact extended beyond his business endeavors. He also owned the New York Cosmos, a storied soccer franchise, and played soccer at Columbia University, which he continued to support through philanthropic efforts. In recognition of his contributions, Columbia’s soccer stadium bears his name.

Under Commisso’s leadership, Fiorentina reached the Conference League final in both 2023 and 2024. Despite these achievements, the club has encountered difficulties this season, currently finding itself in the relegation zone of Serie A.

Fiorentina’s statement reflects the profound loss felt within the soccer community. Commisso’s passion for the sport and commitment to his teams left an indelible mark on both Fiorentina and the broader soccer landscape. As fans and colleagues remember his contributions, they also reflect on the challenges he faced and the changes he sought to implement in Italian football.

Commisso’s legacy will undoubtedly endure as a testament to his dedication to soccer and his impact on the industry.
