Black Phone 2 Scores Box Office Victory with $42 Million Opening
UPDATE: The horror genre celebrates a significant triumph as Black Phone 2 has officially debuted at the top of the box office, raking in an impressive $42 million worldwide. Released by Blumhouse on October 20, 2025, this highly anticipated sequel has garnered $26.5 million from North American audiences alone, signaling a robust start that outpaces its predecessor.
The original Black Phone, released in 2022, opened with $23.3 million domestically and $35.8 million globally. The latest figures highlight a notable surge in interest, marking a crucial win for Blumhouse after its recent releases, including M3GAN 2.0 and Wolf Man, which faced disappointing box office performances earlier this year.
Directed by Scott Derrickson and featuring returning stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Miguel Cazarez Mora, Black Phone 2 continues the chilling tale of children terrorized by a malevolent force, now using a new black phone at a summer camp setting. The sequel diverges from its source material, presenting a wholly original narrative that has already received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike.
In stark contrast, Tron: Ares has plummeted by 65% in North America, adding just $11.1 million to push its domestic total to $54.6 million. Internationally, the sequel struggled as well, accumulating $14.1 million but failing to resonate with Chinese audiences during its debut weekend. With a cumulative global total of $103 million, the future of the Tron franchise appears uncertain.
Meanwhile, anticipation builds for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, with Netflix yet to reveal box office numbers. The film’s limited release is set to expand to additional theaters next weekend, potentially altering its performance metrics.
As we look ahead, moviegoers can expect a lineup of fresh content next weekend, including Yorgos Lanthimos’ comedy Bugonia, Tina Romero’s Queens of the Dead, and Chris Stuckmann’s horror debut Shelby Oaks, all hitting theaters on October 24. Although this Halloween weekend appears devoid of genre films, excitement brews for the release of Predator: Badlands on November 7.
With the box office landscape shifting rapidly, Black Phone 2 stands as a beacon of hope for horror fans and filmmakers alike, showcasing the genre’s enduring popularity and potential for fresh storytelling. Stay tuned for further updates as this cinematic saga unfolds.
