Central Texas Local Races Head to Runoff Elections on Dec. 13
UPDATE: Runoff elections are set for December 13, 2023, as several key local races in Central Texas failed to produce a majority winner. With no candidate securing over 50% of the vote, these elections will see the top two contenders compete for critical municipal positions.
In Buda City Council District C, candidates Kimberly Goodman and Jeffrey Morales will face off after both garnered approximately 43% of the vote. Goodman was just 75 votes shy of an outright victory, highlighting the competitive nature of this race.
In Kyle, the mayoral race is heating up as Robert Rizo and Yvonne Flores-Cale move forward. Rizo captured 42% of the votes, while Flores-Cale secured 32%. Rizo, however, was 422 votes short of avoiding a runoff, indicating a tightly contested election.
The Kyle City Council District 1 will see incumbent Bear Heiser battle challenger Courtney Goza. Heiser received around 40% of the votes, while Goza trailed with 27%. Heiser was 546 votes away from a definitive win, underscoring the stakes in this district.
In Leander, a crucial race for City Council Place 3 will feature Natomi Blair and Anna Yelaun, who received 47% and 40% of the votes, respectively. Blair was just 200 votes from clinching victory outright.
Pflugerville’s mayoral race is also heating up, with Doug Weiss and Pat McCord advancing after Weiss captured 47% of the vote to McCord’s 35%. Weiss was 246 votes short of a clear win, making this runoff critical for local governance.
Finally, in San Marcos City Council Place 2, Josh Paselk and incumbent Saul Gonzales will vie for the position after Paselk received 35% of the votes and Gonzales 27%. Notably, Paselk was 1,107 votes away from the needed majority.
As Central Texans prepare for these decisive runoffs, voter engagement will be crucial. The outcomes will shape local governance and community priorities for years to come. Stay tuned for updates as the elections approach.
