UPDATE: The Chicago Fire have officially advanced to the first round of the MLS playoffs with a resounding 3-1 victory over Orlando City, thanks to a stellar performance by Hugo Cuypers who netted two second-half goals on October 25, 2023, at SeatGeek Stadium.

In a thrilling match, Brian Gutiérrez also contributed with a goal, propelling the Fire into the next stage where they will face the Supporters’ Shield-winning Philadelphia Union in a best-of-three series. This marks the Fire’s first playoff appearance since 2017, under the leadership of first-year head coach Gregg Berhalter, the former U.S. men’s national team coach.

The game took a decisive turn early in the second half when Gutiérrez found the back of the net just three minutes after the break. He expertly settled a cross from Jonathan Dean and fired a shot into the goal, making it 1-0. Shortly after, in the 57th minute, Cuypers displayed remarkable hustle, capitalizing on a clearance attempt by Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, redirecting the ball into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cuypers wasn’t finished yet. Just 11 minutes later, he scored again, this time off a well-placed pass from Philip Zinckernagel, bringing the score to 3-0 and leaving Orlando City reeling. Although Tyrese Spicer managed to score for Orlando in the 89th minute, it was too little, too late.

Orlando City, which had previously advanced beyond the first round in the last two playoff seasons, is now facing challenges, having secured only one win in their last eight games.

As the Fire celebrate this monumental win, fans are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of a playoff run. The upcoming matches against the Philadelphia Union promise to be intense, and all eyes will be on the Fire to see if they can continue their momentum.

What’s Next: The Fire will prepare for their first match against the Union, with fans eagerly anticipating how this rejuvenated team will perform in the playoffs. Stay tuned for updates as the playoffs progress!
