Cooper Flagg’s NBA Debut Disappoints as Spurs Crush Mavericks
UPDATE: Cooper Flagg’s highly anticipated NBA debut ended in disappointment as the Dallas Mavericks fell to the San Antonio Spurs 125-92 on October 25, 2023. Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick, struggled significantly, scoring just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting.
On his first offensive play, Flagg connected with Anthony Davis for a lob pass, but he failed to finish with a dunk, foreshadowing a challenging night ahead. The sellout crowd at the American Airlines Center was left disappointed as Flagg went scoreless in the first half, committing three turnovers without an assist.
“Not great,” Flagg remarked after the game, acknowledging his struggles. “Obviously, didn’t play incredibly well, but we’ve got to move past it and focus on Friday against the Washington Wizards.” The Mavericks will need to regroup as they prepare for their next matchup.
Flagg’s debut was overshadowed by Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ No. 1 pick from 2023, who dominated with an impressive 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Meanwhile, Spurs guard Stephon Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year, added 22 points while defending Flagg. “He didn’t shoot the ball well, but he seemed a lot more poised than I thought he would be,” Castle noted, providing a glimmer of hope for Flagg’s future performance.
Flagg did manage to pull down 10 rebounds, becoming the fifth player in Mavericks history to achieve a double-double in his debut. However, the team’s performance was sluggish, averaging only eight points on the 19 possessions Flagg led. Coach Jason Kidd expressed optimism, stating, “He played well. The stat line is not going to say that, but he will learn from this game.” Kidd emphasized the need for the team to improve their flow and adapt to their new system.
Despite Flagg’s struggles, he showed determination in the second half, attempting to be more aggressive. He scored his first points with a midrange jumper on the opening possession of the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide as the Spurs outscored the Mavericks 33-21 during that period.
The Mavericks are now faced with the challenge of bouncing back from this heavy loss. “It’s early, so we got to keep working on that,” Flagg said, reflecting on the need for improvement. With the next game looming, Flagg and the Mavericks are looking to turn the page and build on their experience.
The urgency is palpable as fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Flagg responds in his next opportunity. The NBA season has just begun, and the spotlight remains firmly on this rookie sensation.
