BREAKING: Loyola-Chicago men’s basketball team will proudly wear a patch on their jerseys this season to honor the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, who passed away on October 9 at the age of 106. This heartfelt tribute was officially announced by the university in a social media post earlier today, stating, “Our biggest fan will be with us all season long.”
Sister Jean became an iconic figure during the Ramblers’ remarkable run to the 2018 NCAA Final Four, captivating the nation as she supported the team through their unprecedented journey. Her unwavering spirit and dedication to Loyola-Chicago basketball made her a beloved presence on and off the court.
Born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on August 21, 1919, Sister Jean joined the Loyola staff in 1991. She quickly became a vital part of the basketball program, serving first as an academic adviser before taking on the role of chaplain. In August, health issues forced her to step back from her duties, but her legacy and influence on the team remain indelible.
During the thrilling 2018 NCAA tournament, as the No. 11 seed, the Ramblers achieved a stunning run to the Final Four, ultimately falling to Michigan. At the age of 98, Sister Jean was a constant source of encouragement, praying for her team and their opponents before each game, and instilling a sense of unity and determination among the players.
Loyola-Chicago is set to open its season at home against Cleveland State on Monday, and the jersey patch will serve as a poignant reminder of Sister Jean’s impact on the program and its community. Fans and players alike are expected to feel her presence on the court as they embark on this new season, united in her memory.
As the Ramblers take the court, the emotional tribute to Sister Jean will resonate deeply, reminding everyone of the power of faith, support, and community in sports. This season, Sister Jean’s spirit will undoubtedly inspire the team and its supporters to strive for greatness, as she always encouraged them to do.
