Trump Gifts White House Golden Key to South Korea’s Lee Jae-myung
UPDATE: In a significant diplomatic gesture, U.S. President Donald Trump has gifted a rare golden key to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations. This symbolic key, presented on December 16, 2023, marks a remarkable return of goodwill following Trump’s earlier receipt of a historical treasure from South Korea.
The golden key, one of only five specially crafted for the White House, was delivered during a meeting between Trump and South Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung-wha. Trump expressed admiration for Lee, stating, “I really like him,” highlighting the cooperative spirit that defines their relationship.
This gesture follows a meaningful exchange that took place during the October 2023 APEC summit in Gyeongju, where Lee presented Trump with a model of the ancient Silla-era gold crown. This crown, excavated from the royal tomb of Cheonmachong, symbolizes a deep historical connection between the two leaders.
The golden key is not just a token; it is engraved with the U.S. presidential seal and the words “Key to the White House.” This honor elevates Lee to a prestigious group of recipients, including notable figures such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
“This golden key, carrying special meaning, is hoped to become a symbol of the strong South Korea-U.S. relationship,”
said Kang Hoon-sik, chief of staff at the presidential office, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to nurturing the bilateral alliance.
Trump’s decision to send this unique gift stems from the personal significance he attached to his visit to South Korea. The golden key is designed exclusively for select guests of notable importance, reinforcing the special bond between Trump and Lee.
As the world watches, this exchange of gifts illuminates the ongoing diplomatic efforts and the strengthening of ties between the United States and South Korea. The golden key not only serves as a symbol of friendship but also represents a shared vision for the future.
This development is expected to resonate beyond mere symbolism, potentially influencing diplomatic discussions and cooperative initiatives between the two nations. As both leaders continue to engage, the implications of this gesture may pave the way for enhanced collaboration in various sectors.
