Urgent: Denver Airport Seeks Funds Amid FAA Flight Cuts
UPDATE: Denver International Airport (DIA) is taking drastic measures as the federal government shutdown continues, threatening air travel just weeks before the crucial Thanksgiving holiday. Officials have requested a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to use airport revenues to pay air traffic controllers who are currently working without pay.
DIA’s Chief Executive Phil Washington stated, “This is a critical time for travel,” emphasizing that staffing issues are surfacing at numerous airports. The shutdown, which began on October 1, 2023, has already prompted a 10% reduction in allowable flight capacity at 40 high-volume airports, including potentially DIA, starting this Friday.
As the FAA manages over 44,000 flights daily, this reduction is set to have significant implications on air travel nationwide. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the cuts, citing safety and the need to support federal workers as the primary reasons. “We must ensure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
Travelers at DIA have enjoyed minimal delays thus far, but officials are bracing for potential disruptions as the shutdown drags on. Communication Director Courtney Law warned, “We know that could change at any point.” Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their flights and stay informed about their travel plans.
With an annual passenger count exceeding 82 million, DIA is a vital hub, particularly for United Airlines and other carriers. Despite the ongoing challenges, wait times for TSA screenings remain under 30 minutes, thanks in part to new systems introduced earlier this year. However, the airport has launched a “food and essentials pantry” to support the 1,800 federal employees working unpaid during the shutdown.
Officials are appealing for public donations of non-perishable food, toiletries, and other essentials to aid air traffic controllers, TSA screeners, and Customs agents. “As this shutdown continues, just getting to work and covering everyday expenses becomes increasingly challenging,” Washington added.
Air traffic controllers have been under immense pressure, often working six days a week with mandatory overtime. Reports have surfaced of controllers calling out due to frustration and taking on second jobs to cope financially. The staffing shortages have already resulted in significant delays at several U.S. airports, raising concerns as the holiday season approaches.
Airlines, including Southwest Airlines, are actively assessing the situation and preparing to notify customers of any changes to flight schedules. “We continue to urge Congress to immediately resolve its impasse and restore the National Airspace System to its full capacity,” the airline stated.
This shutdown is now the longest on record, with weekend staffing shortages reported at air traffic control facilities. An analysis by the Associated Press revealed that during the last weekend, at least 39 air traffic control facilities indicated potential staffing limitations, a stark increase from pre-shutdown averages.
As developments unfold, DIA officials are working closely with the FAA to gauge the impact of the announced flight reductions. The upcoming days will be critical as travelers prepare for one of the busiest travel periods of the year amid ongoing uncertainty.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation continues to evolve, and be sure to check with airlines for the latest flight information.
