Urgent Thanksgiving Turkey Buying Guide: What You Need to Know NOW
UPDATE: As Thanksgiving approaches, food safety experts are urging consumers to consider the best timing for purchasing their turkey. With the holiday only weeks away, many are asking: Is it too soon to buy your turkey?
Thanksgiving falls on November 23, 2023, making it one of the latest dates possible this year. If you’re planning to cook the turkey, understanding when to buy and thaw it is critical for a safe celebration. Experts advise that the timing of your purchase should depend on whether you choose a fresh or frozen turkey.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, if you’re opting for a fresh turkey, you should wait until just one or two days before Thanksgiving to buy it. During this time, keep the turkey refrigerated, ideally on a tray to catch any juices that may leak.
If you prefer a frozen turkey, the good news is that you can purchase it at any time. The health department states that a frozen turkey can remain in the freezer “indefinitely,” but for best quality, it’s recommended to cook it within a year. This means savvy shoppers can buy a turkey post-Thanksgiving and store it for next year!
As you prepare for the big day, proper thawing is essential. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) emphasizes that thawing your turkey safely is crucial to avoid foodborne illnesses. They advise against thawing on the counter, as this can lead to the turkey entering the “Danger Zone” — temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit where bacteria thrive.
Instead, the FSIS recommends three safe thawing methods: thawing in the refrigerator, in cold water, or using a microwave. Be mindful that thawing times vary based on the turkey’s size. Remember, if you forget to thaw your turkey in advance, you can still cook it frozen, but it will take at least 50% longer than if it were thawed.
As families gear up for Thanksgiving, retailers like Walmart are also rolling out special offers, including a Thanksgiving Meal Basket that serves ten for under $40. This is a great option for those looking to simplify their holiday meal without breaking the bank.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s vital to plan ahead. Ensure you’re ready to serve a delicious and safe turkey meal by following these expert guidelines. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the holiday!
