Anita Tsuji, Community Leader and Philanthropist, Passes Away at 88
Anita Tsuji, a beloved resident of San Marino, California, died peacefully on October 26, 2025, after a brave battle with cancer. Surrounded by her children, Tami and Mark, along with her cherished grandchildren, Chelsea, Chase, and Christina Eldredge, her passing marks the end of a life dedicated to family and community service.
Born Anita Luise Kummer on March 24, 1937, in New Jersey, Anita’s early years were spent in Germany during the tumultuous times of World War II. At the age of ten, she made the courageous journey across the Atlantic Ocean alone, arriving in the United States ahead of her parents, who later joined her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold K. Tsuji, M.D., a distinguished cardiac surgeon. The couple met at Columbia University, where they both laid the foundations for their successful careers; Harold as a surgical resident and Anita as a laboratory technician. In 1960, they relocated to California and settled in San Marino by 1966.
Anita was known for her unwavering commitment to volunteerism. Initially, she supported her children’s schools in San Marino before becoming involved with CARES, a support group for the Los Angeles County Hospital at the USC Medical Center. Her philanthropic efforts extended to the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, which she joined in 1969. This organization plays a vital role in funding music education programs throughout the San Gabriel Valley and supports the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
For over two decades, Anita contributed to the Union Station lunch program, providing meals for families in need at the Family Shelter. She was also an enthusiastic participant in the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Pasadena Symphony, and the Pasadena Playhouse.
Anita and Harold shared a passion for the outdoors, particularly at the Isthmus of Catalina Island, where they became active members of the Isthmus Yacht Club in 1979. Anita made history by serving as the first woman Commodore of the club.
Her legacy encompasses not only her family and friends but also the countless lives she touched through her community service. Anita’s kindness and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to CARES through their PayPal link: www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2151418. A private family burial is scheduled in Hawaii.
