UPDATE: A significant winter storm is impacting New York and New Jersey, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing urgent winter storm warnings. As of December 27, 2025, updated forecasts indicate that snow totals have been lowered, but dangerous conditions persist, especially for holiday travelers.

The NWS reported a reduction in snowfall and sleet accumulations across the region, stating, “Due to a further northeast shift of mixed precipitation, forecast snowfall totals around NYC and northeast NJ have been lowered.” However, the situation remains critical, with snow and ice expected to create hazardous travel conditions overnight.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of preparedness during the holiday season, urging residents to monitor local forecasts and to utilize the state’s weather and emergency alert system. “New York is no stranger to snow and cold weather. Stay vigilant, drive slowly if you need to travel, and have a safe holiday weekend,” she stated.

Current NWS projections show that snow and sleet accumulations could reach between 2 to 5 inches in the New York City area, with northern regions possibly seeing up to 6 inches. A light glaze of ice is also anticipated due to freezing rain, further complicating travel conditions.

Travel disruptions are expected as the winter storm coincides with a record-breaking 122.4 million Americans projected by the AAA to travel during this festive period. Authorities are warning that the combination of snow and ice will significantly reduce visibility and make roads treacherous.

The winter storm warnings remain in effect for the Tri-State area until 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2025. The NWS has classified this event as a “significant combination of hazardous winter weather,” urging the public to take necessary precautions.

As the storm progresses, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and to consider delaying travel plans if possible. The NWS continues to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected as conditions evolve.

Stay safe and informed as this winter storm unfolds, impacting millions across the Northeast.
