URGENT UPDATE: Washington State’s Attorney General’s Office has just announced the formation of a groundbreaking Public Records and Open Government Unit, aiming to revolutionize government transparency. This initiative includes the establishment of a new Chief Transparency Counsel role, designed to enhance public access to vital government information.

The AG’s office revealed that public records requests have surged dramatically, doubling from 528 in 2014 to an astonishing 1,032 in 2024. Attorney General Nick Brown emphasized the necessity of this move, stating, “Transparency is a key part of the work we do every day to protect and support Washingtonians.” This initiative comes at a critical time when public trust in government is faltering.

The newly formed unit aims to consolidate existing resources and streamline the handling of public records requests under unified leadership. This strategic restructuring is crucial in addressing the growing demand for transparency, ensuring that citizens can effectively oversee government operations.

Moreover, the AG’s office is not stopping at internal changes. Earlier this month, they proposed significant updates to the model rules governing responses to Public Records Act requests. This is intended to empower state agencies to provide timely and thorough access to public records. A public comment period is currently open, with an in-person hearing set for Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the John A. Cherberg Building. Remote participation options are available via Zoom.

The search for the Chief Transparency Counsel concludes today, with applications officially closing. A selection is expected by the end of the year, marking a pivotal moment in the AG’s commitment to a more transparent government.

This multifaceted approach underscores the urgency of improving public access to government actions and decisions. As Attorney General Brown noted, public access is more important than ever “to let the public see our work for themselves.”

Details about the hearing and how to participate can be found on the AG’s official website. This initiative represents a significant step toward demystifying government operations and reinforcing transparency as a cornerstone of public service in Washington State.
